Lake Garda North Loop

Starting directly from Torbole, on the northern shore of Lake Garda, this loop is one of the most enjoyable rides for cyclists who want to discover the landscapes surrounding the lake beyond the busy shoreline roads. It is a varied and scenic route that gradually transitions from the Mediterranean atmosphere of the lake into the quieter alpine valleys of the Trentino hinterland.

The ride begins by heading toward nearby Riva del Garda, where the road soon starts climbing toward Passo Ballino. This first ascent is steady and very rideable, winding through forests and offering occasional views back toward Lake Garda below. It is a classic local climb: never too steep, perfect for finding a comfortable rhythm while gradually gaining elevation.

At the summit of Passo Ballino, the landscape changes noticeably. The rugged cliffs of the lake give way to open countryside, small villages, and green pastures that characterize the area of the Giudicarie. Traffic becomes lighter and the roads quieter, making this section particularly enjoyable for cycling.

Continuing through this peaceful rural landscape, the route reaches the charming village of Stenico, one of the most picturesque points along the ride. Overlooking the valley stands the impressive Castello di Stenico, a historic fortress perched on a rocky spur with beautiful views across the surrounding countryside. Nearby, riders who wish to explore further can take a short detour to the Cascate del Rio Bianco, a series of striking waterfalls hidden within a narrow gorge.

From here the route gently descends toward Comano Terme, a quiet area known for its thermal springs and lush meadows. The road then continues along the valley toward Sarche, following the course of the Sarca River through vineyards, orchards, and dramatic limestone cliffs.

The final section of the ride leads back toward Lake Garda along the Sarca valley. As the mountains open up and the air grows milder, the scenery begins to shift once again, returning to the Mediterranean character typical of the lake. The approach back to Torbole offers a rewarding finale, with beautiful views as the valley opens toward the deep blue waters of Lake Garda.

This loop is especially appreciated by visiting cyclists because it showcases the incredible diversity of landscapes around Lake Garda in a single ride: lakefront scenery, forested climbs, historic villages, alpine pastures, and quiet valleys. With moderate climbing, well-paved roads, and generally light traffic away from the lakeside, it is a perfect route for riders who want to experience the region beyond the main tourist routes while enjoying one of the most scenic cycling areas in northern Italy.
